Nissan Canada announced today that it has partnered with Toronto artist Alex McLeod to create a unique non-fungible token (NFT) inspired by the GT-R. The work will be auctioned off next month with a reserve price of $280,000 CAD ($220,000 USD).
The person who wins the auction won’t just get an NFT, though. They’ll also get the keys to a shiny new GT-R NISMO Special Edition, which is a pretty big perk.
“Nissan wanted to create an NFT that would celebrate the GT-R’s legacy and mark the launch of its most exclusive edition to date,” said Ken Hearn, head of marketing at Nissan Canada. “It’s been great working with a talented, innovative artist like Alex to bring Nissan Canada’s first-ever NFT to market, and we’re thrilled to reveal the final piece of art today.”
The automaker says it chose to work with Alex McLeod because of his out-of-the-box approach and creative use of 3D rendered environments. The NFT showcases the GT-R in three supernatural environments to highlight the vehicle’s supernatural performance.
“When designing the NFT, I wanted to create a piece that has a sense of familiarity, but which is also totally imagined and exciting,” said McLeod. “The GT-R NISMO Special Edition is unlike any car I’ve seen before, as it looks like it comes from another world. I wanted to explore that idea and show people what it could look like, by bridging realities between our physical and imagined worlds.”
The NFT will be hosted on the RubiX Network, an NFT marketplace that uses proprietary technology to reduce the environmental impact of NFTs. The car, meanwhile, will come in Stealth Grey and will be delivered to the auction winner when it arrives in Canada later this fall.
Pre-bidding for the auction will happen between September 23 and October 5. The auction window, then, will take place between October 5-7. Nissan says that any money they make over the $220,000 USD reserve price will be donated to charity. The auction is open internationally, but Nissan says that the winner must be able to pick the car up from a Canadian dealership.
